Panorama School Climate Survey window #2: February 14 - 17, 2022
The time for our second School Climate survey is approaching. This survey will be administered through the Panorama survey platform just as it was in October 2021. Some important points to note about the survey are provided below.

  1. Survey administration will take place during Statesman Time from February 14 - 17, 2022.

  2. The survey is not anonymous. If a student demonstrates that they need support through the survey, we will be able to follow up and provide additional support to our students.

  3. The survey questions are as follows: (How well do people at your school understand you as a person? How connected do you feel to the adults at your school? How much respect do students in your school show you? How much do you matter to others at this school? Overally, how much do you feel like you belong at your school? The goal of Statesman Time is to provide time for students and staff to build relationships with one another and learn about our core values of positive relationships, respect, and teamwork. In your opinion, is Statesman Time achieving its goal? Do you have a trusted adult at Hixson? Please share the name of your trusted adult at Hixson. Do you have any questions, comments, or concerns about Hixson Middle School?)

  4. All survey questions are optional. The survey can be submitted even if a student doesn't answer all the questions.

  5. We want all students to take the survey. However, if a parent wants to opt their student(s) out of the survey, they can add their student's name to the opt out list. This list will be shared with you prior to survey administration. Students who are opted out of the survey may read a book or work on homework while they wait for the other students to complete the survey. A student can also opt themselves out of the survey by just letting you know.

  6. Panorama does not market, sell, or rent any student's personal information, nor do they engage in, inform, influence, or enable advertising to students. Panorama does not use student data for purposes other than serving schools and districts pursuant with their written contract.

You will receive scripted instructions to read to students prior to the survey administration window, along with access to the opt out list.

Changes to COVID timelines (per Dr. Simpson's email on January 25 at 2:15pm)
Please be sure to read the following information from Dr. Simpson's email regarding changes to COVID timelines. If a student is unable to return to school at day six because they are still sick, you will need to continue giving them access to live instruction via Zoom until the student returns to school. If the student is still sick beyond their 10 day isolation, Amy Hensley (nurse) will confirm for you that Zoom instruction needs to continue.  A student is only eligible to return if their symptoms have improved/subsided.

Effective Wednesday, January 26:

  • A student/staff member who tests positive will need to stay at home for a minimum of 5 days. If they are asymptomatic or their symptoms are resolving (without fever for 24 hours) they may return to school on Day 6 or thereafter.  While masks are still required in the WGSD, students and staff should continue to wear a well-fitting mask around others at home and in public for 5 additional days (Days 6 through day 10) after the end of their 5-day isolation period. As testing remains a key mitigation strategy, we encourage testing on Day 5 or shortly thereafter. To order 4 free at-home COVID-19 tests, please click on the following link: www.covidtests.gov

  • Close contacts who are required to quarantine will need to stay home for at minimum 5 days. If they develop symptoms, they are to get tested immediately and isolate at home until they receive their test results. If they test positive, they must follow isolation recommendations (bullet above). If they do not develop symptoms, they should return to school on Day 6. While masks are still required in the WGSD, they should continue to wear a well-fitting mask around others at home and in public for 5 additional days (Days 6 through day 10) after the end of their 5-day quarantine period. As testing remains a key mitigation strategy, we encourage testing on Day 5 or shortly thereafter. To order 4 free at-home COVID-19 tests, please click on the following link: www.covidtests.gov.

  • In most circumstances, students and staff who are asymptomatic close contacts with someone during the school day will be allowed to remain at school under our current guidelines for modified quarantine.

  • Starting Tuesday, February 1, we will update our COVID Dashboard on a daily basis.  Daily updates will include the number of positive cases at each school and the 7-day moving average. Close contacts or families of close contacts will still receive notification from the school as soon as possible. There will not be school-wide notices of cases at any of our schools.

Your school’s nurse will contact you if the changes outlined above will impact your child’s return to in-person school.

In the meantime, please remember to:

  • Remain at home if symptomatic

  • Let us know if you’ve tested positive for COVID-19. You can let your school nurse know or contact huertas.rachel@wgmail.org

  • Wear a properly fitted face covering when inside our schools and district buildings. Face coverings remain a critically important strategy for protecting yourself and others from COVID-19.

  • If eligible, please consider getting vaccinated or boosted as soon as possible.  Doing so will:

    • decrease your chance of testing positive for COVID-19,

    • minimize the likelihood of severe symptoms if testing positive, and

    • allow you to remain at school in the event of being identified as a close contact.

To find a vaccination clinic near you, please go to: https://revivestl.com/get-your-vaccine/.

PMIGA update
The Progress Monitoring, Intervention, Grading, and Assessment Committee of the School Improvement Team is examining current grading practices in the building in the efforts to create a universal grading policy at Hixson. Please take some time to complete the survey found at the link below by February 11th. You may choose to respond to this survey as an individual, CLT, or department.

Protocol for reporting COVID related absences
If you are experiencing COVID-like symptoms and therefore need to get tested, please send an email to Shenita Mayes and Human Resources (hrc@wgmail.org) explaining your situation, and enter the absence in Aesop as soon as possible. This same process applies if you need to care for a child or family member who has COVID or needs to get tested for COVID. I am trying to keep very close tabs on the progression of COVID in the building, and I need your prompt communication in order to do that.

Generally speaking, the sooner you enter an absence into Aesop, the better, regardless of the reason.

Who is permitted to access live instruction via Zoom?
Here is the explanation for who is permitted to access live virtual instruction, and how you can respond to parents if they are choosing to keep their student home out of extra precaution, but NOT due to official quarantine or isolation.

I completely understand you choosing to have (child's name) stay home due to the rapid increase in COVID cases. It continues to be a challenging time for us all. (child's name) can access his/her/their assignments through my Canvas pages while he/she/they are absent. His/her/their attendance will be marked with a U (unexcused absence) for all class periods each day until he/she/they returns to school.

According to district policy that follows Missouri's Department of Education guidelines, students may only access live virtual instruction if they are quarantined (suspected COVID, close contact, awaiting test results) or isolated (positive for COVID). If either situation applies to your child, please contact our Nurse, Amy Hensley, to report the information. She will advise you on next steps and provide us/teachers with confirmation of your student's quarantine or isolation, if applicable.

I hope (child's name) and your family continue to stay safe and healthy.  Please reach out with any further questions.

Summer School update
Please read the following note from Jessica Greenberg and Alka Woodard regarding summer school. Please note, we will post the summer school positions that we still need internally next week if we don't have enough Hixson teachers who have fully confirmed that they want to teach summer school. If we don't get enough teachers from internal postings, then we will post externally.

As January is coming to an end, we are already looking to staff summer school. Alka Woodard and I (Jessica Greenberg) will be your summer school admin interns this year, and we are considering a STEAM focus or cluster of courses for our summer programming, amongst many others. We have brainstormed some possible classes to be taught but would love input from you on what you are interested in teaching.

Some example course titles:

  • “So This is Middle School”- an introduction to Hixson and the middle school model for incoming 6th graders.

  • The Voice- a singing competition

  • Fitness Frenzy-Outdoor/Indoor games and activities - let students get some energy out while working on teamwork skills.

  • Top Chef- Cooking competition

  • Poetry Slam!

  • Backstage Bootcamp

  • This is “Sew” Easy!-Sewing Class

  • German

  • Math in the Middle

  • Reading for Pleasure and Purpose

  • STEM Explorations

  • Sustainability

  • Personal Finance

Summer school will take place at Hixson Middle School, and it will run from June 6 to July 1, 2022. The hours will be 8:30 am to 12:45 pm. The rate of pay is $29 per hour. Retirement is deducted if certified summer school staff work more than 17 hours per week. Retirement is deducted if summer school support staff work more than 20 hours per week.

Please email us by THIS FRIDAY 1/21 with your summer school class interest. As we receive responses, we will send out more detailed information regarding this summer.

If you have a Statesman Time group assigned to you, you are required to engage them each day in the lessons that are provided, or in something else that you have planned that is in line with the purpose and goals of Statesman Time. Statesman Time can only be successful if we all work together to make it the best it can be.

For those of you who have Statesman Time groups that might be interested in mini service projects, we are compiling a list of Hixson-based and "outside of school" projects that are easy to do. If you have an idea, please add it to this list! We are trying to see how many we get, and then we will determine how to pursue these projects.

Attendance update
Throughout this week, I have answered phones and gotten knee deep in the details of attendance! Wow that job is hard! I have so much respect and appreciation for Cindy Delaney, Nikita Hicks, Earline Banks, and Sarah Magruder! Our school would quite literally implode without them.

One of the most important things that can make attendance run efficiently and effectively is accurate and timely record keeping. If you have any involvement in taking attendance each dayplease do your best to make sure it is done accurately and on time. We recognize the challenges that come with this, especially now with the increase in staff absences and simultaneously managing Zoom and in person learners, but attendance is our collective responsibility as a school. That is never going to change.

Statesman Time updates
Information about the PE rotation will be released by Jordan Lewis on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. After receiving this information, please review it with your Statesman Time classes to make sure everyone is on the same page. The rotations will start the week of January 24.

I also wanted to share the parent feedback that I collected about Statesman Time prior to winter break. Here are a few highlights.

  • There are 109 responses. 53 are in favor of single grade level ST groups. 21 have no preference. 32 were in favor of multi grade level ST groups.
  • Some parents report that their students are not being engaged by Hixson staff during Statesman Time.
  • Some parents report that their student is having a great experience in Statesman Time.
  • There are also some good ideas in the feedback!

If you have a Statesman Time group assigned to you, you are required to engage them each day in the lessons that are provided, or in something else that you have planned that is in line with the purpose of Statesman Time. Statesman Time can only be successful if we all work together to make it the best it can be.

The Chelsea Center presents Show, Do, & Tell!
Join the Chelsea Center to create the first ever district wide Show, Do & Tell event.  This event will showcase students of all ages engaged in learning by doing.

Why should we participate? Show, Do & Tell provides opportunities for students to curate and then share their learning with an authentic audience, which are powerful components of Experiential Learning. Students who participate will also make connections with each other, across grade levels, buildings and content areas, potentially expanding their vision of learning to include multiple pathways for Experiential Learning through WGSD. The event will help families, community members, and students better understand and celebrate the many benefits of experiential learning.

Who should participate?Teachers and a select handful of students from your classroom who can show, do & tell about the power of Experiential Learning.

What does participation look like?Show, Do & Tell will showcase students of all ages who are engaged in learning by doing. Teachers and their students may bring something, do something, or engage the audience in doing something to demonstrate their experiential learning.  Tables will be set up for groups in the WGHS cafeteria.  Families and community members will be invited to explore and engage with students and teachers at their tables.  If you are in need of other supplies, please contact Kerry Arens (arens.kerry@wgmail.org) or Jenny Willenborg (willenborg.jennifer@wgmail.org).
