Sunday Night Memo, 3/29/2020

March 29, 2020

Friday night, my husband looked at me and asked “what do you want to do this weekend?”.  He was half joking, half serious as we talked about things that have been on our to do list for years.  The days run together now and thankfully, the structure of school for me, work for him, provide some sense of normalcy.  However, we both agree that we are not homeschoolers.  Charlotte is starting to miss her friends and learning how to have a conversation with her classmates via FaceTime.  Teaching 5 year olds how to talk on the phone is interesting. So much change in the new normal.  Yet, we have just begun on this journey and the impact of the virus is being felt.  A former Ambrose teacher who we had the opportunity to know through Charlotte passed this week from Covid-19.  An 8thgrade student also felt the sting of this virus as her family is mourning the loss of their grandpa who passed from Covid-19 as well this week.  Unfortunately, the impact is just starting which can be absolutely terrifying.  During this time, staying connected while we are physically disconnected is important.  I hope you are finding ways to stay connected to the folks who provide laughter and comfort to you as well as still take the time to take care of yourself.  You will hear that a lot and it is important.  My self-care this weekend has been found in pints of ice cream and binge watching Tiger King and the 3rd season of Ozarks.  I think the kindest thing I did for myself was finally admit that I am absolutely terrified.  Terrified for my brother who is an anesthesiologist in Atlanta who is working in crisis mode, caring for countless patients.  Terrified for my friends who run EDs and are finalizing their wills and separating from their families to protect them. Terrified for my girlfriends who are answering the call to duty and voluntarily leaving their private practices and going into hospitals to mitigate the upcoming predicted shortage.  Terrified about how many people will be impacted and the cost to all our lives.  Be safe everyone.  It’s a scary time but I’m hopeful we will come out of this and we will be able to see each other in person and not just on a screen.

We will have weekly Zoom faculty meetings but we won’t always have a ton of things to discuss.  I still don’t enjoy meeting to meet but think a consistent time is important because we are physically disconnected.  If you can’t make a meeting, don’t worry.  Life happens and it will be recorded.  I’ll still send out a Sunday Night memo each week to in order to maintain our normalcy.  I hope you had a great “first day” on Friday!

Have a good week and see you on Zoom!
With gratitude,
Grace

Student Welcome Back Video Assignment
To provide some reassurance and normalcy to our kids, we are putting together a video montage for them on the “first day” of our new school.  If you would like to participate, please do the following:
1.)     Share anything you would like with your kids (quote, something you always say, words of encouragement, etc.)
2.)    Take a picture of it with you or your name attached to it (so they know who it’s from)
3.)    Send it to Jason Heisel by Wednesday at 10am.

Here is an example of what we are trying to do: https://www.facebook.com/347381079685/posts/10158109596999686/

Stay safe, Hixson peeps.  We are thinking of each of you and are here to support you.  See you tomorrow!

Virtual Faculty Gathering, 3/23/2020

Hi All,
This was probably not how you envisioned Spring Break to go.  Hopefully, you have managed to find some time for yourself in the middle of figuring out the new normal.  I know there are probably a hundred questions and while we are figuring this out as we go, we would like to answer them and hopefully put you at ease.

On Monday, we will have a virtual meeting via Zoom. Please see below for the invite and just click to join.  The meeting will be at 1pm and last until 2pm.  We will answer all your questions as we get ready to begin our virtual school.  If you are wanting to get a head start and begin getting your google classrooms ready, please do the following:
·       Add ONLY your evaluating administrator to one of your classes
o   If you teach a level 1, level 2, level 3 type class-add the evaluating administrator to each of those sections

The district email had a lot of information, please just note the following:
  •        We have time!
  • Teaching and learning doesn’t officially start until March 27th.
  •  This is still your Spring Break and we would like you to try and enjoy it as much as possible.

·       We will figure this out together and may need to lean on each other more now as we try to collaborate in a virtual school.

No question is a stupid question-please ask.

In the meantime, stay safe and please let me know if you need anything.  Cell is 314-422-0810.

“See” you on Monday!

With gratitude,
Grace

Sunday Night Memo, 3/1/2020

March 1, 2020

Friday was an emotional day with the discovery of the racist meme and my announcement.  I recognize the emotional toll acts of racism creates for each of us.  For our kids, there is also an emotional toll and confusion as they try to navigate how to process.  I can’t imagine it’s helpful for kids to process how to stand up against acts of racism, especially when adults on social media are providing a strong narrative on how it should be handled.  School is a microcosm of the bigger world and they need us to help them figure out how to stand up and advocate while also grappling with how to give the offender grace when a horrible act of racism was made.  With that, our role as educators is to help facilitate how kids are processing, not provide our own narrative.  I ask that as we start the week, you check in with your kids at the start of each class.  If necessary, please hold a restorative circle if you have kids/classes that need to process.  If you are not comfortable with that, please call the office and ask for a counselor or admin to facilitate.  This situation was shocking and devastating to our community and especially the students impacted by the racist meme.  To respect confidentiality, I can tell you that everyone impacted is moving to work to repair the harm that was created, in addition to the punitive consequence.  Please do not share details about the punitive consequence.  I realize folks will figure it out and there will be talk.  As educators, it is our responsibility to honor confidentiality with discipline actions with our children.  If you need to talk about it or just process yourself, please let me know.  I am here for you as well.

Principal’s Search Mtg w/Simpson and Wiley-Skinner, 3/2

PT Conferences, 3/9 and 3/11
PT Conferences are next Monday (4-8) and Wednesday (1-8).  All meals will be provided on both days.

Faculty Mtg, 3/23
Please mark your calendars for the last formal faculty meeting on Monday, 3/23.  Due to the change in conference dates, we had to move our last meeting.  The meeting will be at 3:30pm in the cafeteria.
