November 26, 2017
It's almost hard to believe how fast our Thanksgiving break went. I hope you had a great break with family and friends, with time carved out just for yourself. I always find myself at this point, the last night of a well needed break, wishing for just one more day. However, looking ahead, I know the next four weeks or so will fly by and we will be leaving for our Winter break so we just have to hang on for a crazy busy month!
PLC/Department Mtg
The monthly PLC/Department meetings will be tomorrow. We will start as a whole faculty in the auditorium tomorrow and then break for meetings by department. District Human Resources will start our meeting off with some information and then an opportunity to ask any questions. They are visiting each school throughout the district to give teachers an opportunity to ask any questions. Aimee will also do a quick review about the SLO process and then you will head off by departments.
Hixson Holiday House Tour, December 3rd
The PTO is still in need of a handful of volunteers to help host the homes on the tour. If you have some time on Sunday, please take a look at the sign up link to see if any of the open times work for you.

Have a great week everyone!

Family Shoutouts
Congratulations to Leah, Stephanie and Carin for the amazing Orchestra and Choir Concerts. The kids are so talented and it was awesome to see them share their passion. Thanks for all your hard work!
Congratulations to Katie K. for presenting at the National Council for Teachers of English this weekend about digital tools she uses in her classroom to provide her students with feedback on their writing. Session attendees asked thoughtful questions about her practices and walked away with tools they can use with their writers.
SUBSTITUTE ALERT
I've been asked to consider the number of staff taking personal and school business leave on certain calendar dates for the rest of the year. I wanted to give you all a heads up as well. I'll try to approve all the days but if you don't get approval on the dates I share, it is because they are already high volume sub days. The reasons are for the all department meetings, new teacher observation days and Social Justice work days.
Here are the dates I was given that already have high sub needs from district scheduled meetings:
November 30: New Teacher Observations
December 5: PE PD
December 7: K-5 Science Facilitators
January 18: 6-8 SS Vertical Mtg
January 25: 6-8 Science Vertical Mtg
February 1: K-5 Science Facilitators
February 8: 6-8 Math Mtg
February 14: 6-8 ELA Mtg
March 29: 6-8 SS Vertical Mtg
April 5: PE PD
May 1: 6-8 Science Vertical
May 3: K-5 Science Facilitators
I hope you find time to truly relax and refresh your hearts and bodies. Teaching is a tough job and one where we fail to take care of ourselves. Enjoy the break and do something just for yourself!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving,
Grace

Sunday Night Memo 11/12/17
November 12, 2017
We are in the final stretch of our last full week before getting a well deserved break (and hopefully restful) next week for the Thanksgiving holiday. Here are a handful of things for the coming week:
Faculty Development
Tomorrow the Trauma Informed Care PD Group will be meeting in the library at 3:30pm. The following folks are signed up for this group:
Lab School
There will be two groups of principals visiting our building tomorrow. Every other month, I meet with a group of new principals as part of a development program from DESE. This month, we are learning how to provide feedback to teachers through the evaluation process so principals can become better instructional coaches. They are visiting four classrooms tomorrow and learning how to effectively provide instructional feedback. You will see them walking around in the building and the bulk of their meeting and learning time will be in the library classroom.
Classroom Social Media
Please be mindful of promoting social media use with students in your classroom. Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and many other social media platforms require users to be 13 years of age and older. Sometimes, students use these social media platforms to do harm rather than use it for good.
Webster Holiday House Tour
Team leaders will be talking with folks about volunteering to host during the holiday tour. The 26th annual Webster Holiday House Tour will be on Sunday, December 3rd.
Equity Meeting
The district Equity committee will be meeting on Tuesday, November 14th at 5:30pm in the library at the High School.
Out This Week
Todd, Aimee and I will be out this Thursday for a DLT meeting. We should all be back by noon.
Aimee will be out this Friday for the NCTE Conference.
As always, we will have our phones with us if you need anything, please don't hesitate to text or call.
Have a great week everyone.
With Gratitude,
Grace

Sunday Night Memo 11/5/17
November 5, 2017
Happy Sunday, everyone. It's hard to believe that November is here already. Our school year is flying by and soon it will be winter break. The stretch from October to November can be sometimes difficult. There are also a lot of things happening in our world and personal lives that can sometimes tax our spirits. I hope you are finding time to take a minute from the frenzy and take care of yourself.
GEMS
Beginning Monday, there is an additional GEMS class that has been added to the schedule. Mrs. Dacia Stewart who teaches Gifted Fine Arts will also teach an additional section of GEMS Enrichment for 7th grade students who have opted out of the GEMS SS class. The class will be taught 3rd hour and will follow the old Project Plus scheduling model. Mrs. Teresa Groene will continue teaching GEMS SS for both grades.
D's and F's
Just a gentle reminder that if you have any students who are currently at a D or F, please contact their parents. As we close our our first quarter, it is important to make sure we are communicating with parents about student progress. Not all parents check the grading portal so we can't rely on it as our only means of communication about a student's progress.
Faculty Meeting
This month, our two PD Strands will be meeting on different days (just for this month). The Restorative Practices session begins tomorrow in the cafeteria at 3:30pm. The following family members will be learning about Restorative Practices:

Out This Week
Our counselors and SW are out this week, Monday and Tuesday. The door to their office area will be locked because there will be no supervision. If a student is in crisis, please notify or send them to the office.
I'll be out of the building on Friday for a Principal Leadership Development meeting. I'll have access to my email or phone if you need anything though.
Have a great week everyone.
With Gratitude,
Grace
